Traditional Event: Falling Leaves
Booking: All buildings and outdoor spaces must be booked by a Wellesley College organization. Contact Felding's current provost. For Felding's web page, go to:
http://www.wellesley.edu/Activities/homepage/felding/felding.html
Cost: The cost must be covered by the college organization. Alumnae Hall Ballroom usually costs around $600/day (as of sept. 2000). Rooms in the library, dorm living rooms, and outdoor spaces are free.
Note: Any event that costs an organization money MUST be open to all Wellesley students. We may request that they wear garb but we cannot require it.
Availability: As of the time of this entry, the administration is entirely inflexible about booking the Alumnae Hall Ballroom. They usually offer us a date in the fall and either we take it or look for somewhere else to hold our event. Most of the other spaces on campus are far more flexible in their availability.
Martial Activities: To my knowledge we have had fencing and heavy list on campus. Thrown Weapons may be possible after negotiations with the administration. Archery would likely have to be far away from the rest of the event but could probably happen. Equestrian activities would not be allowed.
Parking: For nearly all of these spaces, it is possible to drive a car close by for unloading only. Parking is usually within a 5-minute walking distance.
Alcohol: Wellesley policy requires that any of our events on campus must be completely dry.
Accomodations: Wellesley students are allowed to have guests sleep in their rooms for up to three consecutive nights. There are a number of hotels in the area.
Buildings:
Alumnae Hall Ballroom: The traditional indoor space for Falling Leaves. This is a ballroom with a small stage. One wall is mirrored. There is access to a small covered outdoor area as well as an outdoor theatre. There are men's and women's restrooms but no separate changing facilities. There is no kitchen. Wellesley provides tables and chairs as we request them.
Dorms: many of the dorms have living rooms which, while too small for most of our events, are beautiful settings for guild meetings, sewing circles, parties, etc. Dorms have public kitchen facilities with limited refridgerator and storage space, a range top (usually electric) and stove, and a microwave. Restrooms for both genders are available.
Library: the Clapp library has a number of lecture rooms as well as the Sanger Room for meetings, though it is too small for events. Food is not allowed in the library.
Other Spaces: There are a number of other spaces on campus that Felding has not used in the recent past, but might be viable for certain activities. These include the Chapel, Schneider Student Center, Shakespeare House, and the Alumnae Hall Auditorium. Contact Felding's current provost for details.
Outdoor Spaces: Munger Meadow: The traditional outdoor space for Falling Leaves. This is the size of a rugby field and then some. We can usually have hurling, heavy list, fencing, children's activities, etc. comfortably. Severance Green: An alternate outdoor space that we sometimes use for our fall demonstration. This is a picturesque site but more difficult to book than Munger Meadow.
Other spaces: There are many outdoor spaces at Wellesley College including the athletic fields, the academic and residential quads, and the Chapel lawn. Contact Felding's current provost for details.
