English Needlework Rose

decorative bar
This pattern is from the center of a square cushion inscribed "N. C." and "1601". A photograph of the piece appears in Elizabethan Embroidery by George Wingfield Digby (Faber & Faber, London: 1963). The photo was in black and white, so the colors shown here are only a guess based on the accompanying text describing the cushion as "yellow, green, and blue, with some black, on a deep blue ground".

The rose itself is 66 stitches high by 65 stitches wide.
